About M Howard

I earned a B.A. Philosophy from Tulane University because I love theoretical and abstract thinking. After a marginally successful career as a singer-songwriter, a friend recommended I try substitute teaching; I loved it and enrolled in graduate school to earn a B.A. in English Literature and a Master's Degree in Teaching - Secondary School English to become a highly qualified certified teacher. While in graduate school, I began working for the Princeton Review as a SAT (Math and Verbal) Tutor while continuing substitute teaching multiple academic subjects. Over the last twenty-three years I have worked as a certified teacher and private tutor.

About the lesson

Twenty-three year's experience has honed my ability to identify and build on each student’s strengths to raise student grades and test scores with practical effective strategies. Student who work with me routinely raise SAT scores by 200 points and ACT scores by 4 composite points. Students improve at least a full grade in academic classes. I love my job, and for this, I am extremely lucky. Working one on one with a student is a rewarding personal experience based on mutual trust. The student can not hide one on one as he or she can in a large class. If they don't understand something, it is apparent. It builds character to say, "I don't know;" it takes courage. I respect this relationship by always remaining positive and providing instruction as a leader or coworker, not as an authoritarian. I never ask the student to do anything that I am not willing to do with him or her, and I never condescend. Mistakes are part of the learning process. It is not a teacher's perfection that inspires students, it is his or her authenticity and genuine care for the student's success. A teacher is not only imparting knowledge along the generations, but a teacher models the behavior of discovery and the sheer enjoyment of learning and academic achievement.

Details

I charge $80/hr for SAT/ACT private tutoring and college counseling. SAT/ACT tutoring sessions last 2 hours once a week. There is a discount for small group tutoring. For example, if two to three students wish to tutor SAT together, the fee is reduced, there is a discount for small group tutoring. For example, if two to three students wish to tutor SAT together, the fee is reduced: 2 students pay $50.00 each, 3 students pay $40.00 each.
