I give lessons from age 16 to degree and postgrad level. I structure my lessons around the needs and requirements of the student, and study the particular syllabus carefully to prepare students for exams. I listen carefully and encourage students to do their own thinking. I also give help in proofing and close reading of student and professional texts. I particularly enjoy teaching poetry, Shakespeare, the Romantics, and Modernism. I also enjoy teaching Creative Writing, particularly poetry. I have particular experience in teaching the Cambridge and Pearson English Literature syllabus. Prospective students (or parents) it is always OK to ask in advance which novels and plays I can teach (because it takes time to prepare): but I can teach all Shakespeare and all poetry.

Find out more about Giles

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first became interested in poetry and Creative Writing as a child, and then at University I started writing plays. After a while, I began concentrating more on poetry. Once I left university, I started teaching, and found I enjoyed it, since I could talk about the things I loved.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I enjoy most talking about poetry, Shakespeare, and my students' writings. I find that when we talk about a piece of writing, between us we can usually find ways to improve it.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had some great, engaging, committed English teachers at school. But I had a maths teacher who would drone on when most of the class had drifted away. I try to be like the former.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, a willingness to listen, a sense of fun, and creativity. Also, of course, a good knowledge of the field.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Careful which poems you read out loud! I read out a sad poem and made a student cry.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

It has taken me a while to adopt to teaching online, but now I enjoy it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion right now is to relax after a long day of teaching and read some books.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Being alert to students, to talk openly about literature, life, and exams.
