About Osamah

Hello! My name is Osamah and I am a First Class History graduate from a Russell Group university specialised in English tuition & 11+ prep. My passion for teaching derives from the priceless reaction of a student achieving a good grade. I aim to inspire confidence in students as many children have not yet unlocked their full potential. Helping students become the leaders of tomorrow brings me satisfaction as I know that I am leaving a positive impact on society. I understand that it is hard to concentrate, so I like to provide an array of tasks as I understand this helps retention. I have taught classes with multiple students as well as one-to-one sessions. In addition to teaching in person, I have experience teaching on Zoom and Skype, so I can adapt to any situation. I worked in a tuition centre for over a year, which allowed me to gain the experience needed to teach effectively and produce the best results from my students. I was the most experienced English tutor and was responsible for aiding other tutors.

Having had over 5 years' experience teaching children, I am aware that each student has to be tailored to. Therefore, I assess the ability of each student and then proceed with tasks that I feel suit the student's ability. This is also dependent on their academic year and what they are covering in school as well. I like to build a relationship with students as then it makes the class enjoyable and not just another lesson that they are forced to attend. I bring extensive teaching experience with a diverse student population. My students have ranged from newcomers to the UK to pupils from prestigious institutions such as Eton College. A wide range of tasks will be provided as I acknowledge that learning through different methods helps retention.

My group classes are held on Zoom, in a seminar format. The key concepts and structures are covered and then the students will be given tasks that help apply what they learnt.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I know it is cliché, but I really did fall into tutoring. On a Friday night back in university, I received a call from my old tutors, and they asked if I could teach English. I gave it a shot, and that was the start of my journey. I quickly noticed the gap for male tutors who can connect with young people and help them achieve their full potential in English — even if they do not like the subject. I stayed at the tuition centre for over a year and was the most experienced tutor, responsible for helping the other English tutors. This experience was invaluable due to the range of situations I faced. I taught 1-1 and big classes. I taught online and in-person. I had to teach SEN students and those with autism. I genuinely value the lessons it taught me and will never forget the people who took a chance with me.

However, my passion for private tutoring took off when I switched from a full-time job to part-time in 2022. Within a few months, my student base shot up, and I quickly realised that this could work long-term. I enjoy the challenge of changing a student’s opinion on English and on studying in general. I encourage them to look at it from an angle that makes sense to them.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I enjoy creative writing, as it is one of the best ways to help a student enjoy English. I also really enjoy the 11+ because it pushes students out of their comfort zones. By introducing them to subjects they have never experienced before, it develops their critical thinking.

If we are being honest — no adult can focus for 60 minutes straight, let alone students. Therefore, I like to break the lesson up by discussing topics that interest them. This could range from football and designer brands to money mindsets and future aspirations.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One of the most influential individuals in my journey has been my self-development teacher. He can simplify complex concepts in a way that resonates with anyone.

I try to analyse how he teaches and implement what I can in my own sessions — and I have seen a world of difference.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The easy answer would be that they know their subject inside out. However, that is not enough.

Communication skills are key. It is one thing to know a topic and teach it, but what separates the average tutor from a specialist, is understanding the learning style of the student and adapting concepts in a way that makes sense to them. Breaking down concepts is not just about oratory — it may require visual resources as well. Tutoring is a 2-way street, a tutor must listen to the student attentively and answer any questions they may have as this allows the lessons to flow.

Interpersonal skills are vital when tutoring. It is important that a tutor can build rapport with students. This allows the student to feel comfortable, and they are more likely to absorb the information and concepts.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In Year 9, history was one of my weakest subjects. Our teacher struggled to manage the class, and her teaching style never connected with me. Things were so chaotic that the head of history had to step in. That change made all the difference — suddenly, the subject started to make sense, and I began to enjoy it. From there, I chose history for GCSE, continued it at A-Level, and eventually pursued it at university.

This experience showed me the power of a good teacher. The right one does not just help you understand a subject — they can inspire a genuine passion for it and even influence the direction of your life.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

With English GCSE, it is two subjects — Literature and Language. Many parents do not realise this, which is why it is even more important for students to give it their all.

This is akin to 11+, as we cover up to four topics — two of which are completely new to them.

Another challenge that I occasionally face when starting out with a student, is their lack of motivation. Some children already have a pre-conceived idea that they are bad at a subject. To break this boundary, this requires a few lessons in which we build up confidence. This is achieved through providing simple tasks and asking the student about their previous experience, as this pre-conceived idea was most likely planted by incidents or statements in the past.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I enjoy learning about self-development and how people can maximise their potential. It is vital to nurture the next generation in a way that does not limit them and encourages them to have high aspirations.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my ability to quickly build rapport with a student.

I take the time to understand the student and their interests. In a world where even parents do not always take time out to understand their children, I am grateful for the opportunity to help students come out of their shell and not only flourish in the subject, but life as a whole.
