About Colin

Literature is my passion, as is teaching. Close reading is one of my greatest strengths: I can see, and help students see, what is at work in a text. This fosters passion and interest in my students; at an examination level, it translates into successful grades. I came first in the year, each year, at university I can help any student to excel, too. I have a BA (First Class), an MA (Distinction), and a PhD from Oxford University in English and French Literature. I am fluent in English and French, and research, publish and peer review work on both. I am happy to teach both language and literature. Specialist in resits and intensive courses. I have demonstrable experience (and testimonials) in raising exam performance: my last residential student improved from C-B to A* at A-Level English Literature in a matter of months - indeed, he ultimately came first in the country in A-Level English Literature. I have also had great success helping students gain entry to a variety of well-known prep and senior schools and universities; my tutees have won many scholarships (Magdalen English scholarship; Eton King’s scholarship in English; 7th in the country for Oxford University's ELAT English entrance exam). Over many years, I have refined a supportive, informed, and question-based teaching style that brings out the best in my students while providing the highest quality of support and creative and intellectual input.
