As a first-time language student at university—having started Latin from scratch in my first year—I have been exposed firsthand to the travails of beginner language-learning: from nervously piecing together my first initial sentences, to struggling with syntactical understanding, to experiencing just how unnervingly frustrating gaps in grammatical understanding can be when trying to move on to more complex concepts.
Being of Chinese descent—as well as spending the good portion of my childhood and adolescence in Beijing—I never learned beginner Mandarin in a classroom context, speaking the language virtually from birth and spending school hours reading literature. However, my lessons are bespoke to each learner, tailored to fit one’s individual needs, and emanated from several cardinal principles I found to be most effective when I myself learned a language ab initio: all lessons are held in as much spoken Chinese as possible, irrespective of a student’s prior abilities—immersion facilitates naturalisation of new languages—questions are encouraged, and each student will have a comprehensive understanding of each former topic before moving on, as so to establish a solid substratum of linguistic knowledge as the student progresses from “beginner” to “fluent”.
My lessons are for all ages—the only requirement is desire to learn or improve one’s Mandarin, and willingness to work to achieve this goal!
