About Mark
I find the exact tone and pronunciation errors that keep you from being understood.
Five years of teaching, plus a background in voice acting. I diagnose tone problems entirely by ear — where your pitch sits too high, where a third tone flattens out, where a contour collapses halfway through the syllable. Then I show you the exact mouth shape and tongue position that fixes it. Your first lesson is free, and you'll leave it with a written diagnosis of your own pronunciation.
Lessons run fully in English whenever you need them to.
If you're starting from zero, that means no guessing and no charades — clear explanations of grammar, abstract vocabulary, and everything else that's hard to reach through immersion alone.
Why pronunciation first
Most learners plateau at "technically understandable." That's an expensive place to sit: you're doing all the work of speaking Chinese and still getting the confused half-second pause from the person across the table. Tone accuracy is what converts effort into being actually heard — and it's the hardest thing to fix alone, because you can't hear your own error.
That's the part I'm good at. Beginners building habits from scratch, advanced learners with a fossilized accent — both fixable.
A real window into China
I studied engineering and physics, and I read Chinese history and philosophy for pleasure. In class that means we can work with real material — a Song dynasty argument, a passage of Zhuangzi, how a Chengdu neighbourhood actually functions — instead of textbook dialogues about buying apples. Language is the most direct access anyone gets to a civilisation, and I'd rather spend our time there.
AI-assisted, human-taught
I build my own AI tools and I put them to work on your behalf. After each lesson I turn my notes into material made for you specifically — reading passages at your level, drills for the three sounds you're actually struggling with, homework built from the words you tried to use and couldn't. Booking, reminders, and materials all arrive automatically, before class rather than during it.
AI does the preparation. It never does the teaching. The hour we spend together is the expensive part and the human part — everything else is built to protect it.
Your first lesson is free
60 minutes, and you won't have to perform — I lead the conversation, so you're never dropped into silence and asked to produce something in Chinese. Then we practise together: initials, finals (including ü, the one English gives you no equivalent for), and tones. You'll leave with a written diagnosis and a concrete plan for fixing what we find.
Book the trial. Worst case, you get an honest read on your Chinese and it costs you nothing.

My lessons are built around one rule: you should leave each session able to say something you couldn't say before — and be understood when you say it.
A typical lesson
We open with conversation in Chinese at your level. I steer it, so you're never sitting in silence hunting for something to say — and while we talk I'm listening for the tone and grammar patterns that are actually holding you back, not the ones a textbook predicts you'll struggle with.
We then take one or two of those patterns and drill them in context — full sentences you'd really use, not isolated words. When pronunciation is the problem, I diagnose it by ear and walk you through the mouth shape until the sound lands.
We close by putting the new material straight back into conversation, so it becomes something you can use rather than something you recognise.
How I adapt to your level
Complete beginner — pinyin, the four tones, and the survival sentences you need first. We build pronunciation that gets you understood, not "close enough." Habits set early are expensive to undo later.
Lower intermediate — you already know more than you can say. Most of the hour is you talking, and my job is closing the gap between what you can read and what comes out of your mouth.
Advanced — real material and real topics: history, philosophy, current affairs, whatever you're curious about. At this stage the work is precision — accent, register, and the distance between correct Chinese and natural Chinese.
Between lessons
You get material written for you, not pulled from a shared folder: reading at your level, drills for the specific sounds you're working on, and homework built from the words you tried to use and couldn't. It reaches you before the next class, along with booking and reminders, so no paid minute goes to logistics.
Practical
Anything can be explained in English, as much or as little as you need. Lessons are online by webcam. The first 60 minutes are free — I lead the conversation, diagnose your pronunciation, and give you a written plan before you commit to anything.
