About Maria

When I was in high school, I read the novel "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" which had instructions for making a paper crane. This was my first attempt at origami which catalyzed my interest in making more origami models. After learning more models, I gave some away as gifts to friends. I would also enjoy experimenting with different types of papers and sizes. For instance, I made a large tissue paper lotus and used Starburst wrappers to make cranes.

About the lesson

In college I was in a Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) club and a friend I decided to help decorate a table representing our club. We decided to make origami lotuses in colors of the rainbow. I taught him how to fold a lotus. We would each have a piece of paper and I would say the steps while he followed my instructions in his pace. I taught another friend to make a crane and a lotus using the same methodology.

Maria loves reading and this can be seen when we discuss literature together. She is passionate about her favorite books and seems to empathize with characters and seems captivated by story lines (fictional or non-fictional). She encouraged me to express my personal thoughts about literature and this helped me become more vocal during classroom group discussions surrounding written works.
