About Paolo
I grew up with a severe case of dyslexia. Learning to read and write at a young age was a struggle. It might have seemed that the natural path would have been to go into a STEM field where reading and writing skills would have been a hurdle. But I went into humanities because of a love for ideas. I pursued a BA, MA, and PhD (ABD) in Philosophy because of a sincere belief in the importance of the texts and ideas that constitute this discipline. I have 8 years of experience TAing courses in philosophy, as well as organizing reading groups and speaker series. In addition to tutoring for high school and university students in English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Humanities, I am interested in providing directed reading courses for adult learners.

I believe in the old Enlightenment idea that education is about rational self-development into ever greater perfection. This lofty ideal of education is something most educators share implicitly; it's why they got into the game. But institutional education has obligations to produce credentials, assignments, and grades, which creates dynamics that run counter to individual education. Students are often the victims of this tension because no one is spelling out what is meant to serve their educational needs, and what is an artifice of the institution of education. I believe the best way to overcome this problem is to focus on comprehension of course material and the research process. The writing process, which has to be tailored to particular disciplines and sometimes even to particular instructors' preferences, is made much more enjoyable and easier when you already have a high level of confidence in comprehension of the material.
