  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Growing up I used to sit at the dining table and read the encyclopedia from beginning to end. I was fascinated that there was so much to know, I was hungry for knowledge. I began to notice how all things, events and movements were connected and decided to piece it all together. I quizzed myself over and over, and when I forgot something, I went back to the beginning and began again.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach History and Geography. I love to spill out the whole grand arc of history and see the big picture. I love spending hours looking at maps and drawing what i see. I also enjoy following a subject to its end...which, of course there really isn't! One subject simply leads to another in an endless journey of fascination.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Jane Jacobs is a huge source of inspiration. She was a "normal" everyday person who worked tirelessly for the everyday person and for what is just and right. She was a layperson fired by passion and the desire to do good in the world.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, compassion, empathy, organization, clear communication and discipline.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

As a teenager I used to attend city hall meetings in my hometown. At a planning meeting for the downtown, I spoke out against what I saw to be gross deficiencies in the design and scale of the proposed development. I was shushed and "poopooed", and told that I was far too young to understand such things. Just last year they decided to rip up the development that was put through and cited reasoning that was exactly what I had said, a big win!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest factor challenging the study of history today is the "post-truth" era we live in. We are bombarded with manipulative smear campaigns led by ai chatbots, our elected leaders regurgitate lies so often we cannot, at times determine truth from falsehood.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I absolutely love teaching, coaching, and helping people in general. This is my purpose on the planet. My favorite thing to talk about and learn about is History and Geography.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I believe my passion for my subjects and for people drive me to give 100%. My life experiences have crafted a unique point of view as well.
