About Amanda

I have worked in higher education in the U.S. for about 20 years, first in a student support role, focusing primarily on non-traditional or mature student support, advising, and programming, before transitioning to a faculty role teaching English and Literature to first- and second-year college students in the U.S. I hold graduate degrees in Higher & Postsecondary Education (Columbia University), Teaching the Adult Learner (The Johns Hopkins University), and English and Creative Writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

I am currently earning my PhD in Education at the University of Galway, where my research is fully funded by Research Ireland. (This means I have some experience with proposal writing and scholarship applications as well!).

I love working with college students, and can provide excellent references from students who can speak to my effectiveness as an instructor. Also, I know lots of dad jokes, if you're into that. :)

As a former college professor (voted - by students! - "Teacher of the Year" at my college in 2024), I know the importance of connection, working together, encouragement, and breaking down the complicated parts of academia to help students succeed, not just by learning the material, but learning to enjoy the process. I love using visual aids, practical examples, and hands-on activities to teach students new skills.

I'm particularly skilled at teaching literary theory and analysis, writing academic essays, citation and referencing styles (APA, MLA, and Harvard), invention strategies/brainstorming, editing and revision, and research strategies.

My lessons would be best for secondary or postsecondary/university students, and would last about an hour, though this is flexible based on your needs.
