About Andrea
As someone who once struggled in school myself, I know how stressful it can be when you don’t know why you are scoring poorly on exams, essays, and presentations, and thus how to improve. If you hire me, you will gain quality feedback and customized instruction that directly targets your teenager’s weaknesses and fosters a better understanding and grasp of the content, enabling him or her to improve quickly.
Here are some of my results over the past ten years:
90+% of my students’ grades in Social Studies and English rose to A or A+ within 2 months.
100% of my Regents (NYS) students passed on their first try.
More than 65% of my students earned a 4 or 5 on their AP exams.
94% of my students gained admission to their first choice for college.
92% of my students gained admission to a top 50 college.
I love helping teens to develop the academic and professional tools necessary to maximize their potential and succeed on their own. I have been recognized for relating well to teenagers, for “making history come alive,” and for explaining the backstories that may textbooks falsely assume that students already know. The best evidence of my successful tutoring is that most of my former clients have thrived through the rest of high school and all four years of college with minimal additional tutoring.
My college deans thought I would be an excellent teacher. However, I resisted the idea for several years, until friends convinced me to teach Sunday School with them. A few months later, I took a break from research to try substitute teaching.
I started to tutor in Fall 2009, after earning a Masters in Social Studies Education from Teachers College, Columbia U. I have also taught in a variety of classroom settings since January 2007.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked as historian for the U.S. Congress, U. Cambridge, and The College of William & Mary. I also interviewed and scored undergraduate applicants to Georgetown U., where I earned a Bachelors in History and International Affairs.
In 2013, I switched from interviewing applicants to supporting them as a college essay coach and editor.

I always start with a free consultation, to determine the student's needs and ensure that I would be a great fit. This enables the student to make academic progress starting with the very first session.
I have worked with a wide variety of students- from students with special needs, such as processing delays and dyslexia, to AP Scholars, as well as twice exceptional students. Whether your teen is struggling to pass world history, or wants to gain an extra edge before a major exam, I can help!
For social studies, look for a tutor who specializes in historical / geographical /political science thinking and analysis, as social studies papers require much more than rote memorization, and is aware of the latest exam changes.
For college admissions, look for someone who is in touch with college admissions offices around the country, not just visited campus, so is aware of changing trends and requirements.
One of my tutoring students, who could barely read and write when we started to work together in 10th grade, wrote two A papers for his college English course this spring, despite almost no editing feedback from me!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What study methods have you tried already? Do you feel lost or overwhelmed during class? when reading the textbook? when trying to write an essay? How do you prefer to organize your thoughts?

I charge more for college admissons than tutoring, in an attempt to match industry pricing. Hopefully this site will enable me to offer package rates for multiple sessions.
