About Ralph
I am a professional archaeologist and historian. I am passionate about distilling complex scientific and historical concepts into easy to understand, clear, and concise ideas for learners to digest.
I believe that understanding general concepts is fundamental to learning a subject. Being able to rattle off terms, dates, and names, does not mean one understands. Those details come later.
In addition to being a professional archaeologist, I also have many years of experience as an educator. I taught college level courses in anthropology, archaeology, history, and biology.
I have also taught english to ESL adults, and have worked with younger children as an archaeological outreach instructor.
My first teaching experience was as a tutor in high-school, during the mid 1990s. Since then I have worked as a college level teaching assistant and adjunct professor, as well as a public outreach instructor with the UWM College for Kids.

The first step is to assess a student's level of knowledge on a topic. Then I can taylor my approach. I like to teach in "broad strokes" to make sure that my students firmly understand fundamental concepts before diving into the details, which can be confusing or meaningless without the context of foundational knowledge.
5th to 9th grade, college undergraduates, adults, retired seniors.
