About Leomara

Hello my name is Leomara but you can call me Mara, I’m Brazilian, so Portuguese is my native language. I’m graduated in Portuguese and English and I’ve been teaching in this field since 2001. I’m also graduated in pedagogy what gives knowledge when teaching little kids.
Whatever your purposes are, from business to holiday trip, you have just found the right person!

About the lesson

My aim as a tutor is to create in my students a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions and being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning happens in an environment of mutual respect in which the student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. My experience has been that one-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students’ personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.

My approach varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don’t lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students’ homework for them!

Mara was my teacher in the UK for some years while I learnt Portuguese for work. She is a very patient and kind teacher, who emits confidence to her students. She catered to my specific needs (more formal language for work) while also making sure I had the base to put my thoughts into words. She was always very punctual, hardworking and professional while also making me feel fully comfortable. I can highly recommend Mara to anyone and I owe her a lot for being such a great teacher. Thank you!

Mara could not have been a better teacher! She was extremely patient when I was slow to understand, she always made sure to engage me in discussions so that I could practice my speaking which was extremely helpful as I needed to be able to speak Portuguese relatively fast. We met in the UK through acquaintances and we had about 2 lessons a week for roughly 5 months and I am now able to have full conversations in Portuguese as well as being able to read and write. I cannot recommend her enough, as besides being a great teacher she is also very reliable and friendly!
