About Hatley
One of the most important things in a student-teacher relationship is trust, and I believe there are two great ways to establish that. First and foremost is the simple act of showing up. I guarantee that even outside of class or session hours, I will be there to help a student in a timely manner. On the other hand, I will be there to hold you accountable for showing up, coming prepared, and working through the tough days. I will be right there with you. The second is to let you know who I am and where I've been. I've taught in Mexico, I've tutored for people who were much older than me, and I've worked with many people from different backgrounds or who had vastly different ways of thinking. My point is - no matter who you are or where you've come from, I will teach you what you have set out to learn.

As a licensed TESOL teacher, I am very experienced in teaching English and Reading/Writing! I like to get to know my students and their personalities from the get-go so that I'm able to better gauge needs and wants from them, and I'm always as hands-on as possible. I tailor my lessons to each student and I do my best to make it fun and immersive so that it's more motivating to want to learn!
My typical lesson plan is based around the PPP method. This stands for present, practice, and produce. Presentation comes first, normally in the form of breaking down a concept so that my student understands it at a basic level. Practice consists of guided work that's corrected along the way such as worksheets, games with peers/one-on-one, and furthering the understanding of concept to where it is functional. Finally, production is when a student is comfortable enough with a concept that they can demonstrate their understanding fully through individual activities. These often look like conversations with peers or with me, presenting a small project, or putting it in to real-world context!
As a tutor, I think that my love for learning is contagious. Every student or young person I have worked with seems to grow more enthusiastic with each lesson and I LOVE to see that. I have a university education from one of the best public colleges in America andI aim to work as a professor in Russian Politics someday! For now, though, I care for my grandmother which limits my opportunities to pursue that...which is why I love tutoring!
There's no doubt that the Humanities are my specialty. I tutor/teach literature, reading and writing, and grammar K-12 with extensive experience in high school literature. I also tutor ESL at ANY AGE as long as the individual has a basic knowledge of English (Beginner 2 preferred). I'm very knowledgeable about history and am able to tutor K-12. My SAT score was a 1480 and I love helping students study for that, too!
