About Ralph

I'm a mixing engineer based in Newcastle where I run my own studio, Blueleaf. Music has been my whole adult life: writing, performing and recording long before I was mixing for other people. I have a degree in Music Enterprise and a foundation degree in Music Production from Newcastle College, and I've been doing serious studio engineering for about 9 years. I set up Blueleaf in 2017, worked as an engineer at Downcast Base HQ, and I'm now also main engineer at Loft Music Studios, a commercial studio in Newcastle. I've done my time on the live side too, as front-of-house and monitor engineer running small festival stages and venues.

I'm a musician first. I've played lead guitar and bass for over 20 years, played in bands, and dabble in finger drumming and synthesis. I also spent around 10 years performing electronic hybrid music across the UK underground festival scene. Being on both sides means I understand band-based and electronic music from the inside, and I know how each should feel as well as how it should sound.

That's carried into the work I do. I've mixed pop, singer-songwriter, folk, rock, metal, EDM, reggae, dub, afrobeats, RnB, chillout, cinematic and world music. The variety has taught me that great mixes in any genre come from the same fundamentals, and given me a feel for what makes each style tick, whether that's the weight of a metal guitar wall, the intimacy of an acoustic vocal or the low end of a dub track. I grew up on Nirvana, so I've a soft spot for anything with a bit of grit, and spent most of my twenties at raves and festivals soaking up EDM and anything off-the-wall.

I know what it's like to learn this the hard way: years of going round in circles, half-right YouTube advice and mixes that sounded great until you played them in the car. My aim is to give you the clear, practical approach I wish I'd had at the start.

I care about the music first and the plugins second. I believe in honest feedback, patience, and treating every artist's work with respect, whatever their level. Expect a relaxed, friendly session, a lot of practical know-how, and the occasional bad joke.

Rather than teaching EQ, compression and so on as separate topics, I teach a complete mixing workflow: a clear, step-by-step approach that takes a song from raw multitracks to a finished mix. It's the same process I use on client records every week. Each tool makes more sense once you know where it fits in the process and why you're using it at that point. Learning them in order is what makes a mix come together, instead of just throwing plugins at it.

Lessons are online, one-to-one, and built around your music. Wherever possible we work on your own sessions, so you're learning on songs you care about. I share my screen so you can watch me mix in real time while I explain the reasoning behind every decision, until you can make those calls yourself. You'll see how to think about problems and fix them as they come up, and learn a reliable method for getting consistent results. You'll also learn exactly what to listen for and when, and I'll cover theory, monitoring, and exercises you can do to improve your skills between lessons. I already mentor this way, and it's the quickest route I know from "something's not right" to knowing what to do about it.

Most of what I teach applies to any genre, because the 3D sound field (balance, clarity and depth) works the same way whether you're mixing folk, metal or RnB. I can also cover genre-specific techniques when you need them. I can teach in Pro Tools or Logic Pro, but the principles carry over to any DAW.

Lessons are 2 hours. That's enough time to make real progress on a mix instead of just getting started before the session ends.

These lessons suit independent artists who want to mix their own music, aspiring engineers building their skills, and producers whose mixes aren't quite getting there. Beginners and experienced users are equally welcome. We'll start from wherever you are.

Your first session is a free 30-minute intro call, where we can talk about your music, what you'd like to improve and whether we're a good fit.
