About James

My specialty is teaching Chinese students practical English, I have been speaking Chinese for over 35 years and for this reason I am very familiar with both cultures including the Cantonese culture. About the lesson

For most classes I focus on keeping the class interactive, I use a lot of brainstorming and I stress the need for accuracy in pronunciation, grammar, and context. In the past I used a lot of PPT in my lessons and quizzes and most students found the pictures along with the written text very helpful. In particular I am effective when teaching Chinese students because I speak Mandarin and Cantonese and for that reason I can often bridge the gap when a student cannot think of the right words, gets mixed up with the grammar, or needs a certain phrase or idiom explained properly.

For example, the Chinese phrase "三心两意" is literally translated "three hearts two minds" but the meaning is "someone who is indecisive or to confused to make a decision", because English is full of these kinds of phrases that don't translate well I often found my students needed help to grasp the accurate meaning.

I taught every level from pre-beginner to advanced business, from young, pre-middle school students to adults.
