About Zoë

Hi! My name is Zoë. I'm a graduate of Barnard College (where I studied physics) and a tutor in math, physics, and writing. I have experience tutoring each of these subjects and am passionate about peer-to-peer teaching. In particular, my tutoring style focuses on centering the student's needs, asking questions, and identifying challenges. I am very enthusiastic about critical pedagogy—I constantly reflect on and refine my practice. I hope to provide a transparent and supportive environment to help you learn. I know that math, physics, and writing can be intimidating subjects, and I want to help you become more confident! Please feel free to message me if you have questions about my practice.

Past experiences:

Barnard College Physics Tutor

Barnard College Writing Fellow

Independent AP Calc and High School Math Tutor

Kids' Art Camp Instructor

Info and awards:

Dean's List Student

3.8 graduating GPA at Barnard College

Internships at JPL and LBNL laboratories

National Outdoor Leadership School alum

I worked as a writing tutor (3 years) and a physics tutor (2 years) at Barnard College.  In both positions, I worked with people coming from all academic backgrounds and comfort levels.  As part of my writing tutoring program, I took a course on engaged and accessible pedagogy and writing practices, which inspired me to incorporate critical pedagogy into my practice.  I have also tutored high schoolers in math, and have worked as a babysitter and art camp instructor.  Through each of these roles, I have gained an appreciation for the learning needs of people of all different backgrounds and ages.

When I start working with a new student, my first goal is to talk with the student to figure out their needs and goals.  It is very important to me that the student's needs are centered.  From there, I will ask questions: if we're working on a problem, I'll ask how you might approach it, what concepts it's working with, what you're finding challenging.  For writing, I'll ask what your goals are, what you might be unsure about.  Overall, I want you to feel comfortable and give you opportunities to communicate your needs.  Then, as we go on, we can keep checking in to create a tutoring process that is dynamic and effective for you.

For writing assignments, if you want help working on the piece of writing at hand, I would say: look for a writing tutor who is not necessarily an expert in the subject you're writing about. Sometimes subject experts will prioritize the concepts included in a piece of writing over the argument of the writing itself.  As someone who's worked with writing from all disciplines, I find it helpful to work with someone who approaches writing as naive reader.

I think one of the challenges of being in a math or physics course is that professors and teachers understand the concepts they're describing at a high level.  Since they feel comfortable with the subject, they sometimes take it for granted that students will understand these concepts thoroughly too.  For a STEM tutor, I think it's important to find someone who can match your level of understanding, see where you're coming from, and see what's challenging your understanding of the concept or problem at hand.
