About Basil

I am a WGA television writer and Yale-commissioned playwright with an MFA in Playwriting from the University of Iowa. My television credits include Halo (Paramount+/Showtime) and original pilots developed with FX/A24 and CBS Studios. As a playwright, I have received fellowships from the Mellon Foundation and the Minneapolis Playwrights' Center and have had my work produced and developed at major theaters across the country.

I have been teaching writing for over a decade. I have served as an adjunct instructor at SUNY Purchase and NYU, and as visiting faculty at Williams College and Whitman College. I approach every student as an individual — there is no single method that works for every writer, and I tailor each session to the student's specific goals, strengths, and challenges.

I take my work as a tutor seriously. I am punctual, prepared, and committed to your progress. I require 24 hours notice for cancellations, and I communicate clearly about scheduling and expectations from the start. My goal is to make every session feel productive and every student feel supported. About the lesson

I'm a WGA television writer and Yale-commissioned playwright with an MFA from the University of Iowa and over a decade of teaching experience at SUNY Purchase, NYU, and Williams College. I tutor writing at all levels — essay writing, creative writing, college application essays, and English and literature.

My approach is built around the belief that every student already has a voice; the work is learning to trust it and sharpen it. A typical session starts with whatever the student brings — a draft, an assignment, a blank page — and we work through it together. I ask a lot of questions. I want to understand what you're trying to say before we talk about how to say it better. From there we focus on structure, specificity, and clarity, whether that's the argument in an academic essay or the logic of a scene in a short story.

What sets me apart is professional experience at the highest level of the craft. I've written for network television, developed original pilots with major studios, and had my plays produced and commissioned at leading theaters. I know what it takes to get a piece of writing to land — and I know how to teach it. I work with students of all ages and levels, from middle schoolers tackling their first essays to adults developing creative projects of their own.
