About Waka

Hi, I’m Waka! I am a native Japanese speaker born and raised in Japan, now living in the UK. I have years of experience as a former teacher in Japan, where I taught Japanese to students of various backgrounds and skill levels. This experience has given me a deep understanding of how to teach the language in a way that’s both effective and engaging. My lessons are centred around practical, conversational Japanese, helping you confidently communicate in real-world situations. Whether you're a complete beginner or an advanced learner looking to refine your fluency, I tailor each lesson to suit your unique goals. I believe learning should be enjoyable and meaningful, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way on your Japanese language journey!

About the lesson

My primary focus is on helping students speak Japanese confidently and fluently. I believe that speaking is the key to truly mastering a language, so I prioritise practical conversation skills in every lesson. My teaching style is interactive, friendly, and designed to make learning feel natural and enjoyable. Conversational Focus – Speaking practice is at the heart of my lessons. We’ll dive into everyday conversations, role-playing different scenarios so that you feel comfortable speaking in a variety of situations. Pronunciation and Intonation – Proper pronunciation is essential in Japanese. I focus on helping you master correct pronunciation and the subtle nuances of Japanese intonation, which can be a challenge for many learners. Building Vocabulary – As we practice speaking, I’ll introduce you to useful vocabulary and phrases that you can use right away in real conversations. Real-Life Context – I bring in practical language that you can use in daily life, whether you’re travelling, working, or just chatting with friends. We’ll go over topics like ordering food, asking for directions, or discussing hobbies. Optional Reading and Writing – If you’re interested, I can also teach reading and writing skills, from hiragana and katakana to kanji. We can incorporate this into lessons as needed, but the main focus will always be on speaking. Lessons will typically be in 60 minute slots. For example, 2 slots will be 2 hours long. Students of all learning levels are welcome.
