About Chris
I bring extensive teaching experience as a former University Head of Area, supporting students across both undergraduate and postgraduate art and design. My professional practice spans textiles, healthcare space design, interior styling, large-scale display work, and exhibition curation. This breadth is grounded in a well-researched understanding of Western art, costume history, and interior decoration, areas that continually shape my belief in creativity as a vital force for both the individual and wider society.
My own creative journey has taken me from textiles and fine art to scenography and interior design, allowing me to understand how ideas shift, evolve, and take form across different mediums. Over many years of pushing boundaries in my practice, I have developed an approach to teaching that places the student’s unique ideas, interests, and perspectives at the very centre. I work collaboratively, encouraging curiosity, confidence, and personal vision, helping each learner to explore their own creative path with clarity and purpose.

I teach art, design, textiles, and interior styling with a friendly yet professional approach that supports students to grow in confidence, curiosity, and creative independence. My teaching draws on many years of experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level, where I helped students develop personal visual languages rooted in their own interests, experience, and aesthetic instincts. I bring that same care, patience, and enthusiasm to my one-to-one tutoring.
My central aim is always to work with each learner. Creativity flourishes best through collaboration, conversation, and the gentle shaping of ideas together. Rather than imposing a fixed style or rigid method, I help students uncover and refine their own. We explore what inspires you, what materials you are drawn to, and what kinds of imagery or stories you feel compelled to express. From there, we develop approaches that feel authentic to you, whether in drawing, painting, design thinking, textiles, or interior decoration.
My method is grounded in cultivating imagination and curiosity. I encourage you to take creative risks without fear of failure, to look again at familiar things, and to trust the spark of an idea even when it feels uncertain. Experimentation sits at the heart of genuine artistic growth, and I provide the support, structure, and reassurance needed to explore new directions safely and confidently.
Alongside this, I help you build strong technical and conceptual foundations. This includes key principles such as form, light, colour, texture, scale, composition, and spatial awareness, all vital whether you are developing fine art, textile work, design processes, or interior styling projects. I also support you in developing the reflective and critical-thinking skills that enable creative decisions to become clear, intentional, and personally meaningful.
Students often tell me that my approach helps them see both themselves and their work in a new light. By linking ideas with materials, and imagination with purposeful making, learners begin to form a sense of creative “alchemy”: a feeling that their work is becoming more thoughtful, more expressive, and more aligned with who they are. This process is just as important, if not more so, than the outcome.
Above all, I believe that good teaching should ignite something. It should open new ways of seeing, unlock confidence, and help creativity flow more freely. My role is to guide, encourage, and accompany you on that journey, offering both practical skills and artistic insight. Together, we will develop your creative voice so that your work becomes not only stronger, but also more personal, more imaginative, and more alive.
