First, I would figure out if the student read the text for the course and completed the assignments. Then, I would identify what the problem is that the student is having trouble with. Then, once I get an idea on where the student stand as to understanding the material, I'll do my best to guide them towards their goal of comprehension using my knowledge, textbooks, and/or the internet.
