About Ian
My interdisciplinary background combines education, social services, athletic, and outdoor leadership; enabling adaptable problem-solving in dynamic environments. I've provided freelance personal training, emphasizing holistic wellness, as well as surfing and ocean safety and skill development. I served as an Outreach Worker for Catholic Charities Hawaii, supervising sensitive family visitations (newborns–17 years) and navigating cultural/educational disparities. I taught parents about child development and how to nurture productive relationships with their kids. In college I used conflict theory and systems theory to analyze and demonstrate structural causality within economic and political frameworks. I believe everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn. I do not put myself above anyone else. I treat others the way I wish to be treated; with love and respect.

I like to transform complexity into simplicity (less is more). Lessons begin with an introduction which makes the topic personally relevant to the learner. The fundamentals will be laid out clearly. I then present an interactive exercise to help students use what has been presented. I will give a summary, bringing everything together. Time for feedback and questions are always available throughout my lessons. I am adaptable and happy to work with the different learning preferences of my students.

My hourly rate depends on the topic and level of the learner. The more complex the topic, the more preparation will be needed on my end, which means a higher hourly rate.
