About Jay

As a UW–Madison computer science junior (4.0 GPA) and Dean’s List achiever with real startup and industry experience, I bring both academic strength and practical insight to my tutoring. I create a supportive, structured learning environment where concepts are explained clearly, applied through hands-on practice, and connected to real-world development. I’m patient, dependable, and genuinely invested in student success. If you’re looking for someone who understands both how students learn and how software is built, I’d be excited to help you grow as a developer.

My Teaching Approach:
I teach coding through a practical, student-centered method that emphasizes understanding rather than memorization. I break concepts down into simple terms, relate them to real projects, and guide you through hands-on exercises so you can immediately apply what you learn. My goal is to build confidence, problem-solving skills, and strong fundamentals that transfer to real-world development.

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like
Each lesson is customized, but generally follows this structure:
1) Quick check-in to understand your goals or questions for the day
2) Short concept explanation (this may include Java or Python fundamentals, data structures, object-oriented programming, debugging strategies, version control with Git, or broader computer science topics like how server–client systems communicate)
3) Guided practice: we solve problems or build small features together
4) Independent challenge to reinforce learning
5) Wrap-up: reflection, tips, and next steps

You’ll leave each session with notes, exercises, and clear takeaways you can apply immediately.

What Sets Me Apart:
I bring both academic excellence (UW–Madison CS junior, Dean’s List) and industry/startup experience, including software development work and leadership in building real products.
Because I’ve built apps and mentored others, I emphasize teaching with a real world focus, helping students understand how what they are learning translates into the industry.

I’m also patient, approachable, and genuinely invested in each student’s growth. I meet you where you are and adapt my pace to your learning style.

Who My Lessons Are For
- Middle school or high school students learning to code
- Beginners who want to build a strong foundation in Java/Python
- Students taking intro CS courses or coding assignments
- Aspiring developers who want insight into real projects, debugging, or career paths
