About Catalina

Hi! I’m Catalina, a third-year Biochemistry student who fell in love with science as a curious little girl. As I’ve grown, I’ve become even more fascinated by the creativity and innovation within science, and I know how important it is to inspire that same curiosity in the next generation.

As a student myself, I know how important it is to have a tutor or teacher who makes you feel comfortable, seen, and curious. I want to be that tutor for my students and genuinely care about their learning and progress.

I have experience tutoring Chemistry at the high school level and coaching basketball, which has taught me how to recognize different learning styles and adapt my approach to each student. Having lived in Bolivia, Canada, and Spain has also taught me to be flexible and appreciate different perspectives, broadening my teaching methods.

My goal is to help students not only improve in Chemistry and Math, but also become more confident in themselves and their ability to learn.

About the lesson

My goal as a tutor is for students to actually learn and understand concepts, rather than simply memorize them. I want students to feel comfortable while learning and to see learning as something fun and engaging. Going up to a teacher when you do not understand something can sometimes feel scary or overwhelming, so I want my students to feel comfortable asking me anything and making mistakes, because that is how we learn!

Initially, I would set up a 15–30 minute meeting with the student and their guardian so we can get to know each other, see if I am the right fit for the student, and understand what they are struggling with the most.

A typical lesson would involve the student sending me any worksheets, notes, or material they are working on at least a day beforehand so I can prepare for the lesson. During our session, I would begin by giving an overview of the concepts and then work through examples together with the student. I would adapt each lesson depending on how the student learns best, whether they are more visual, auditory, or prefer learning through reading and writing. As we continue working together, I would personalize each session based on their progress, needs, and learning style.

As a Biochemistry student, I genuinely love science and understand how important it is to build a strong foundation early on. My goal is not only to help students improve in their classes, but also to help them become confident and independent learners who feel comfortable tackling difficult concepts on their own.

My lessons are for students taking Chemistry in Grades 10–12, Science from Grade 6 onward, and Math for students in Grades 5–9.
