About Joseph

Hey guys! My name's Joseph. I was born in Melbourne, Australia, and am now living permanently in New Zealand. I'm currently a first-year law student at UOA and I graduated from WBHS last year, securing full excellence endorsements for level 3. I took three writing-heavy subjects, classical studies, history, and geography, and through this I was able to efficiently develop my writing skills heavily in preparation for my upcoming law year. I finished level 3 English a year early thanks to the English Acceleration program at Westlake.

Outside learning environments, I enjoy bodybuilding and casual sports such as football and basketball. I've consistently been going to the gym for three years now, and through the progress I've made, I was able to learn how to implement my time wisely and the results I can achieve with it.

About the lesson

I provide supportive and structured tutoring for primary school and intermediate students, including those who have just moved to New Zealand and are starting English from zero. As I myself come from an Asian background, I am familiar with these sorts of situations.

For students new to English, I focus on building confidence first, then gradually developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in a simple and practical way. I use clear explanations, visual learning, repetition, and everyday examples so students can quickly start understanding and using basic English in real-life situations. I also focus heavily on speaking practice, helping students learn correct pronunciation and common phrases used at school and in daily life.

I can also help already English-speaking students to further enhance and develop their writing and reading. I especially specialize in structured essay/report writing and vocabulary development.

My teaching approach is patient and step-by-step, making sure students are never overwhelmed. I break lessons into small, manageable parts and regularly revise key vocabulary so learning is consistent and easy to follow. I also create a positive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, as this is an important part of learning a new language.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes long and include speaking practice, vocabulary building, reading activities, and simple writing tasks depending on the student’s level. As students improve, I gradually increase difficulty and introduce school-based English to help them integrate smoothly into the classroom.

I have experience supporting younger learners with foundational English, school support, and confidence building, especially for students adapting to a new country and education system.
