About Gaoyang

I am a recent doctoral graduate specializing in physical oceanography. I hold a good GPA record for maths and physics-related courses (A+ for multivariate calculus, differential equations, dynamical systems, statistics, theoretical mechanics, fluid mechanics, meteorology etc.), and have had experience tutoring a university course on Environmental Modelling in both a classroom setting and in one-on-one sessions, with good feedback from students. I'm currently doing secondary teaching training (so I have had some classroom teaching experience) and aims to be a maths and physics teacher soon. There has been a long tradition of pursuing teaching careers in my family and it was a very touching moment to see my grandma's (who taught high school math) former students come to visit her when she was recovering from a surgery. Seeing how you have the potential to help someone to change their life for the better is the most rewarding part of this career.

My own research focused on turbulence and sediment transport in coastal oceans, where math tools (pencil-and-paper derivations and numerical models) are heavily involved. (ResearchGate: (concealed information)

About the lesson

I can give lessons on:
calculus, linear algebra, statistics (from NCEA, Scholarship included, up to 2nd year university level courses)
Physic up to NCEA scholarship level.

I will guide the student through step-by-step problem solving when they find necessary, explaining the principles underlying why the procedures work. I have been good at showing complex workflow in a logical and clear way. I am flexible with lesson delivery: either online or in person.
