Who I Teach:

Students & Graduates:
Gain practical insights from 47+ years in tooling, prototyping, and project management. I help you bridge the gap between academic theory and real industry practice. Learn real-world DFM/DFMEA, supplier selection, design strategy, and engineering problem-solving — the things employers expect but universities rarely teach.

Early-Career Engineers:
Whether you’re getting started or looking to strengthen your skill set, I provide support in CAD/CAM, prototyping, production methods, efficient design-for-manufacture, troubleshooting, and project management. Learn the whys and wherefores, the dos and don’ts, and the pitfalls and dangers that only experience can teach.

Manufacturers & Businesses:
Optimise existing or new tooling, reduce cost, and improve quality. I offer practical guidance in supplier management, process improvement, and staff training, backed by decades of global tooling and production project experience.

Why Tooling Matters:

Tooling touches almost every aspect of daily life — from the steel hinges on our doors, to the toys our children carry, to the complex plastic interiors of our cars. While tooling can be bought as a commodity, true expertise can only be earned over years of hands-on design and manufacture.
With 47+ years in the industry, I’ve refined the craft, mastering both the art and science behind every tooling and manufacturing project.

My Background:

My journey began in 1977 as an apprentice at Rover Cars in Birmingham, learning to machine, fit, and trial tools. Since then, I’ve worked across computer, medical, automotive, defence, and general manufacturing sectors.
My career has included:
• Contributing to the development of the Super Soaker, working with NASA engineer Lonnie Johnson
• Designing and producing a medical knee brace system for Blue Sky Medical
• Designing and developing a complete hinge manufacturing line, delivered as a turnkey package
• Decades of involvement in UK automotive tooling (since 1994)
• Deep involvement in global tooling projects — sourcing, purchasing, designing, and managing large-scale tooling in Europe and Asia when overseas manufacturing reshaped the UK industry in the early 2000s
These experiences have given me a rare end-to-end understanding of tooling: design, engineering, sourcing, quality, production, and global supplier development.

What I Offer:

I provide tailored support ranging from quick, focused online consultancy, all the way to comprehensive tooling and production guidance designed to achieve specific project outcomes.
You choose the level of support.
I bring nearly five decades of real, applied industry knowledge.
Whether it’s mentoring, troubleshooting, training, reviewing designs, or managing complex tooling decisions — my goal is to give you practical, usable insight that accelerates your confidence and capability.
