About Arvin

I’m a University of Toronto (St. George) graduate with high distinction. Teaching is a passion for me. I have taught eighty three high school students at the University of Toronto’s Summer Mentorship Program as an academic don.

I received 99 in Physics 12 and Physics 11, 98 in Pre-calculus 12 and Calculus 12 in high school.

I started teaching from the spring of 2016. My first student was a grade 10 math student. I helped him increase his grade from 60 to 95. That was when I knew that teaching is something I would like to pursue alongside my studies.

I am internally motivated by teaching. During my undergraduate studies I taught math to grade 10 high school students at the University of Toronto's Saturday program.

I am a University of Toronto Scholar and Innis college Exceptional Achievement award recipient. In high school I had received the Top Student in Physics 12 and 11 awards.

I taught high school math and science to over 30 students at the Oxford Learning centre for eight months. Please read my manager's review.

Currently, I am implementing mindfulness and attention to thoughts when it comes to solving math problems. I have realized that many students struggle with math not because of their inherent abilities, but because of their mindsets. I hear the phrases "I don't like math" and "I'm bad at math" way too often and that's a failure of the school system. Traditional ways don't work anymore. That's when math therapy and mindfulness are useful.

I strive for the self-reliance of the students. After their sessions, students must be able to carry out the same hard work during the session in their independent studies. That’s how they will succeed. Most of the learning happens when the student struggles with the material and tries different methods to find the correct answer. My goal is to leave them with enough tips, tricks and tools to be self-sufficient.

My lessons are tailored for the individual needs of the student. They are personalized. During the session, I take notes on the performance of the student and design the session to address the knowledge gaps and ambiguities in understanding.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I was part of a gifted program in elementary, middle and part of high school. It was called "Tizhooshan" and roughly translates to "the sharp-minded." I never liked the school. My teachers were strict, rigid and traditionalists. Out of all the subjects, I hated math the most. I consistently scored the lowest out of everyone in my class. I was the student who said "I hate math" and "I'm not good at math." In high school, I scored 98 in pre-calculus (Grade 11 math) and calculus (grade 12 math) and A in calculus at UofT. My early struggles with math taught me lessons that led to my later success and eventually interest in the subject.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

Science is how we understand the world around us and without math science would be meaningless. In the same way that to fully understand a culture, we have to learn the language, to understand the world we have to learn its language which is math. I am passionate about teaching math because I can see the results of my efforts reflected in the grades of my students very fast.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I feel I am internally motivated by teaching. It is something that is both intellectually and emotionally stimulating for me. Interacting with young minds, their questions, curiosity and willingness to learn is rewarding. I always tell myself that I should do something that wakes me up in the morning, excited to begin the day and that has been my experience with teaching.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

I had great professors who truly made the subject interesting for us. However, I am more inspired by my students. I had students who had to work and study and many who went through great hardships and despite these difficulties, they went beyond my expectations. I am humbled by the amount of hard work, dedication and perseverance demonstrated by my students. Every day, I learn something from them.
  • What are your keys to success?

Grit, which is hard work, and a growth mindset. No one is born knowing how to solve a calculus question. Yes, some incredibly talented people have to do less work to understand a concept, but hard work and having a growth mindset is vital. I believe for the high school math level, anyone is capable of getting a 100 with the right guidance (tutoring) and hard work.
