About Melanie

My name is Melanie, I'm a mum of one, and have a passion to help young people gain confidence and see them reach their goals. Since maths is often regarded as a hard and boring subject, I try and make the tutoring sessions fun. I ended up tutoring naturally, since my physics teacher in the Netherlands asked me to help a younger student who was struggling. This was in 2010, and here we are, still enjoying tutoring! Ever since I have helped many students pass their tests and exams.

About the lesson

Over the years I have obtained an MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature and a BA (hons) in English language and literature. Most recently I completed a CertHE with the Open University, completing the modules MST124 Essential Mathematics I, MST 125Essential Mathematics II and MST224 Mathematical Methods, all with distinction. The latter I did to boost my maths tutoring background as I have a passion for helping students with maths.

I started tutoring in the Netherlands, where I was born, when I was 16 years old. In total, I have about 8 years of tutoring experience, tutoring English as a foreign language, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, both privately and through tutoring agencies in the Netherlands. Most recently, I have 2 years of experience with helping GCSE/iGCSE students sucessfully pass their exams and reach their college places. My tutoring sessions are 40 mins to 1 hour in length. I welcome secondary maths students between 11 and 18 years old, as well as older students who do maths functional skills or who have to take maths as an extra subject in college after failing their exams.

My approach is gentle, though thorough. I try and find the sore spots and keep working at these before progressing to more difficult questions. I try and provide time for a little chat, to get to know each other and to relax between hard questions. This stimulates motivation, I find. I try to challenge more advanced students and give them space to show me their point of view (which can be very enlightening!!).

I try and build in enough repetition for those with learning disabilities or memory problems. I have also adapted my materials in the past to those students who require a different format (larger font, different colours, etc.). I have worked with students who have learning disorders, learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders and enjoy helping students from this particular group. I also have the benefit of personal experience with a younger sister who is blind, whom I have helped many times during her academic journey, in this way having insider knowledge of the challenges of being in education with special needs.
