About Steven

Hello! My name is Steven and I am a professional educator, researcher, and clinician. My approach to teaching is built on a foundation of empathy, patience, and professional expertise. I believe that true learning happens when a student feels understood, supported and confident. My "why" is simple. I am passionate about helping people navigate complex challenges and achieve their goals whether that's mastering a new language, tackling a high-stakes exam or completing a 5,000-word project. As a qualified Further Education (FE) teacher with a PGCE, I am professionally trained in the art and science of teaching. My experience includes working with a diverse range of learners, including those in high-needs environments. This has taught me how to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental learning space for everyone. As a postgraduate researcher (MRes), I am not just a subject expert, I am an expert in the process of learning, research and academic writing. I understand the anxiety that comes with a big project like the EPQ and I have the precise skills to guide you through it step-by-step. Finally, as a BA (Hons) qualified Acupuncturist, I have a clinician's understanding of the importance of self-regulation skills which I bring into my academic coaching to help students avoid burnout and build resilience. My lessons are professional and learner-centred. I am here to be your guide, to help you build your skills and give you the confidence you need to succeed. I look forward to supporting you achieve your goals.

My Teaching Approach My teaching methodology, developed during my PGCE in ESOL, is fundamentally learner-centred, adaptive, and built on a foundation of trust. I believe the best learning happens in a supportive, non-judgemental space where students feel confident to take risks and make mistakes. My approach is highly structured yet flexible: For Academic & EPQ Coaching: We will act as a team. I break down large, intimidating projects (like the EPQ) or complex essays into small, manageable, weekly goals. My goal is to build your skills in research, critical thinking, and academic writing, so you not only complete the project to a high standard but also develop the self-regulation and confidence you need to excel at university. For ESOL & Language Learning: I use a communicative approach. This means we focus on using English for real-world tasks. While we will cover grammar and vocabulary, the focus is always on using the language. My experience teaching in high-needs environments has made me an exceptionally patient, clear, and empathetic communicator. In all lessons, I aim to help you understand how to learn, not just what to learn. Typical Lesson Length My standard online lesson is 60 minutes. This provides the perfect amount of time for a warm-up, in-depth work on our chosen topic, and a clear review of our goals for the next session. For more intensive academic work, such as reviewing an EPQ draft or an IELTS writing workshop, I also offer 90-minute "deep dive" sessions as needed. My Qualifications & Experience I am a fully qualified teacher, a trained clinician, and a postgraduate researcher. Qualified Teacher: I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in ESOL, qualifying me to teach at the Further Education level. My professional experience includes teaching English to vulnerable learners (separated child asylum seekers), where I specialised in trauma-informed pedagogy and building student confidence from the ground up. Academic Researcher: I am currently completing a Master of Research (MRes). This gives me expert, up-to-the-minute knowledge of high-level academic writing, research methods, and dissertation-level projects. Subject-Matter Expert: I also hold a BA (Hons) in Traditional Acupuncture and a BA in Religious Studies, giving me deep subject knowledge in both the humanities and clinical practice. Who My Lessons Are For I offer specialist, 1-to-1 online coaching for the following students: Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): A-Level (Year 12 & 13) students who need a specialist coach to guide them from topic selection to final presentation. Academic English (IELTS & ESOL): International students (undergraduate or postgraduate) and professionals who need to improve their academic writing, essay structure, critical analysis, and exam performance. Religious Studies: A-Level or undergraduate students needing support with essay writing and understanding complex theories. General English (ESOL): Adults (16+) of all levels (Beginner to Advanced) who want to improve their fluency and confidence with a patient, qualified teacher.
