What I offer:
English Literature tutoring, with a particular focus on:
- building technical and analytical literary skills to tackle unseen prose/verse commentaries
- deep dives into the canon of English Literature, looking at themes, characters, narrative, and author writing styles
- contextual discussions and extra suggested reading material

Creative Writing
Composition and Rhetoric
Film Criticism

The way I work:
I am very happy to tailor our sessions to your particular requirements. If you need to ace your GCSE English Literature Unseen Commentary paper, that's what we'll focus on. If you want to build your confidence writing thematic essays for your A-Level Shakespeare exam, that is what we’ll do.

Our first session will be a discussion of your needs, requirements and aims. Sending me a recent piece of work (essay, commentary, composition etc) ahead of time - minimum 48hrs - will help me better understand where you are, and make our discussion more productive.

Typical Lesson Length:
I work in both 1-hour and 2-hour sessions, depending on the type of class (see below) and on individual student requirements. If you are combining two or more types of class, for example a Deep Dive and Rhetoric, I recommend a 2-hour session.

For English Literature lessons:
Suitable for Year 7 and up only. I am very happy to work to syllabus KS3/GCSE/A-Level/Pre-U etc or devise a course of study with the student. Please specify whether you want a course focused on technical unseen literary analysis, canon deep dives (and if so which authors/works), and/or contextual discussions, or a mix of all three. If focusing on more than one of these, I recommend a 2-hour session. As the contextual discussions are the least structured of the three areas, I do not recommend these in isolation.

For Composition, Rhetoric and Creative Writing:
Suitable for KS2 students all the way to university level. For below GCSE levels, the emphasis will be on learning to understand and manipulate the fundamental story and composition elements, before moving on to attempting narration and writing. I'll also include some reading suggestions to improve vocabulary and storytelling abilities. If additional grammar work is required, we'll focus on that too. At GCSE levels and up, we'll work on prose and verse compositions as well, aiming to improve linguistic agility as well as crafting well structured and thematically and narratively compelling work.

For Film Criticism:
Suitable for 6th Form (year 12 and year 13) and up. Similarly to the English Literature tutoring sessions, Film Criticism is split into the following areas:

Technical and Compositional Analysis (Cinematographic Techniques): this is where we learn about the different kinds of camera angles and shots, why, when and where they might be used in the film, and what effects they might produce. This is really the necessary foundation necessary to produce coherent and engaging film criticism.

Film History: once you understand how and why a film works visually and compositionally, engaging in a course of study of the history of film will enable you to notice which filmmakers are being inspired by/engaging in a sort of dialogue with their forebears, and to what effect.

Deep Dives: by genre, by filmmaker, by country, by actor and by composer.

The written work you'll be doing will be a mix of commentaries of particular scenes/sequences, narrative essays, and film reviews.
