About Jacob

Hello!

I have just finished a degree studying history. I love history, politics, geography, and the philosophy of government and law. This means that I am interested in the questions behind history and the humanities: Why do we create governments? Why do we have laws? Why are so some countries the way they are and why are other countries not? Who gets to make laws? Why?

I have also had a life-long fascination for human rights and human rights education. I have worked for a number of charities and universities around the world (e.g in New Delhi for a month) doing research into human rights! I am incredibly passionate about educating the next generation in why it is so important to care about human rights.

Outside of these sorts of work, I love climbing! Rock climbing, ice climbing, or even big alpine mountaineering - I love it all. I am currently planning a climbing expedition to the Caucus Mountains in Georgia.

I used to play a fair bit of football for my college (not very well). When I am bored of work or exercise (which is sometimes often), I am prone to Netflix/Amazon Prime sprees.

I will treat the tutoring sessions like supervisors at Cambridge use the weekly supervision system. This does not mean that I expect work or understanding at anything like this level! I mean that the focus of each tutoring session will be a piece of work that I will ask my tutees to prepare after reflecting on the last session.

For any age secondary school student right up to year 13 students, the focus of my tutoring will be two-fold. I will help them learn the core elements of the syllabus, and more importantly, I will nurture the core skills of analytical reading, critical thinking, and planning and writing convincing and well structured essays and arguments. To attain the highest grades that students can achieve requires not just a strong grasp of the syllabus, but the essential skills of reading and writing convincingly. This is what I aim to teach most!

The best teachers I enjoyed at Cambridge were those who were patient and kind where my knowledge was weak. Students who are not helped by their tutors when they struggle are being failed. Therefore, in each lesson, I will devote as much time as needed for students to truly grasp and command the ideas I want to teach them - I'm very excited to help!

I have never tutored for pay before, but have plenty of experience tutoring family friends' children for free.

I think £20 is a fair starting price on SuperProf! On top often hours of teaching, I can assure there will be hours of preparation!

For transport, I will merely ask tutees to cover the cost.
