About Sharanya Sahu

Hi! I am Sharanya Sahu, an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley aiming to major in Applied Mathematics and Sustainable Environmental Design. I was a straight-A student in Math in middle and high school, and received perfect scores in SAT Math as well as AP Calculus BC. I have always thoroughly enjoyed learning Mathematics, especially when I was studying with my peers. I know that Mathematics is not a well-liked subject, but I think that's because it is sometimes taught hurriedly in class, with teachers not fully clarifying heavy concepts because of time constraints in school/college. I can give you individualized attention and tailor everything to your learning style. Mathematics can be very simple, and I can show you how if I become your tutor!

About the lesson

I have received straight As in Math classes I have taken since middle school and have qualified for several math tournaments. I firmly believe that doing well in Mathematics (at the school, college, or college prep level) doesn't require "talent" or an innate predisposition towards the subject. What is required is the following:
1. A good understanding of the concept (this depends entirely on the teacher)
2. Familiarity with different types of questions and the most systematic way to solve them (which I can walk the student through and explain)
3. Practice a few problems so that you can stay calm and confident on test day (which I can guide the student through by giving them a few homework questions and pointing them towards resources for extra practice)

Sample lesson plan (2 hours)
30 minutes: explanation of the concept using an online whiteboard tool, asking the student to explain the concept to me, or to solve a simple problem at regular intervals to ensure their understanding.
90 minutes: Problem solving demonstrations, thoroughly explaining the thought process and logic behind each step. After each problem, I will ask the student to solve a couple of problems of the same topic, asking them to explain their rationale as they solve it, so that I know they are on the right track.
End: giving them homework and further study material for extra practice if they need it.

I have been tutored throughout middle and high school, and am familiar with different types of tutors and the effectiveness of their methods. Thus, I have gathered the tools and techniques that I felt were most effective from my student experiences and will use them as a tutor.
