About Nina
Hi, I’m Nina, a current Architecture student at the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture.
I have previous tutoring experience and will also be working as a Transition Mentor, supporting new first-year students as they adjust to university and architectural education. I achieved a strong overall result in my first year and am currently working towards First-Class Honours.
One of my first-year projects was selected for the Bartlett Summer Show, giving me first-hand experience in developing and presenting architectural work to a high standard.
Having completed the UK architecture application process myself, I understand how different and sometimes unclear it can feel compared with other university applications. I aim to provide students with honest, practical and encouraging guidance based on recent experience.
I can support students in both English and Japanese and always adapt my teaching to each student’s goals, experience and creative interests.

Architecture applications are very different from applications for most other university courses. When I was applying, I often felt unsure about what universities were looking for, how to structure a portfolio, and how to turn creative work into a clear and convincing application. My lessons are designed to give students the guidance and clarity that I felt was missing during that process.
My teaching approach is visual, supportive and personalised. I begin by asking students to explain their ideas, interests and current difficulties. We then review their work together and identify the strongest elements, as well as the areas that need clearer development.
Rather than simply telling students what to make, I guide them through questions, references and different design possibilities. This helps them develop their own ideas while becoming more confident in making creative decisions independently.
Lessons may focus on portfolio structure, project development, sketchbook organisation, visual storytelling, concept development, page layout, model and drawing presentation, and preparation for UK architecture or art university applications. I can also help students explain their work clearly in English and prepare for interviews or critiques.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes. Students are encouraged to send their work before the session so that the lesson can be focused and productive. At the end of each lesson, I provide clear priorities and practical tasks to complete before the next session.
I have previous tutoring experience and will be supporting first-year students as a Transition Mentor at UCL. My lessons are suitable for GCSE and A-level Art students, foundation applicants, undergraduate architecture applicants and early-stage architecture students. Lessons are available in both English and Japanese.
