About Maryam

Greetings students! My name is Maryam and I have been tutoring students on Wyzant for about 8 months now. Before Wyzant, I volunteered as a tutor at my local high school and learned even then at that age that I wanted to make a difference in how students learn and help them reach their full potential. As a young girl, I struggled with taking tests and have had instances where I didn’t understand certain concepts. I want my students to feel that I empathize with them and that I understand where they are coming from. Even the brightest fail sometimes and that is okay.
I completed high school with a 3.8 unweighted and 4.1 weighted cumulative gpa. In high school, I took three AP classes my junior year: AP Language Arts and Composition, AP United States History, and AP Chemistry. I also took various college classes offered to me through a local community college such as Public Speaking, Psychology 101, Language Arts and Composition 2, Government, and College Algebra. Currently, I am a college student going into Computer Science on a vocal and academic scholarship.
I also sought to build my skills in the music department. Over the last four years, I have made regional and state choirs, got ones on my solos at both the regional and state level, and was a part of multiple musicals such as the Addams Family and Seussical (as well as other smaller productions).
Recently, I became IXL certified through a partnership opportunity between Wyzant and IXL. Becoming IXL certified has changed the way I've taught students, mainly in structure.

About the lesson

Each student's plan is different depending on where they're at with their knowledge, understanding and goals. I have helped students with homework, and I have also taught homeschooled students various materials long-term. I have helped students study for Regent's tests. I let the student and their guardians inform me of how I can help them.
To help my students succeed, I make sure to go slow enough when going over material and feed them bite-sized chunks so they don’t get overwhelmed. When I feel a student doesn’t understand something, I re-explain the topic through a different perspective. I constantly ask them if they have any questions and if they understand. A lot of the time, to make sure they are understanding, I will ask follow up questions or ask them to do problems in front of me. In the past, I have had students ask for extra practice outside of our allotted time. Since becoming IXL certified, I have used its educational platform to help my students.
