About Natalie

I'm a graduate from the University of British Columbia and currently work in the marketing industry as a copywriter. I have previously worked at the University of British Columbia as a writing consultant for two years, and specialize in academic writing.

I am knowledgeable in the fields of Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, and History. However, as a consultant, I have tutored students through papers in the realms of Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, Business, Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry. Although creative writing is not my formal specialty, I am comfortable with it due to my professional and personal experience. My students have included undergraduates, secondary school students, Master's, and Ph.D. candidates.

I speak several languages and have lived in several countries. As a result, I'm well suited tutoring those who don't use English as their primary language and have been successful in guiding these students to communicate more effectively in their writing.

My lessons are geared towards students who want to improve their overall writing in the long term and don't want to rely on a tutor.

I like to start off my sessions with a self-assessment by the student on what they think they need to work on. Regardless of whether it's an essay or a report, I start off by reading their introduction, the first paragraph, and the conclusion. This is how I check for a cohesive paper.

Then, I ask the student about the paper--what they want to convey, their argument, the goal of the paper, etc. This helps me best understand the perspective of the student, as everyone has a different thought process that translates into how they communicate in writing.

I review the draft, section by section, with the student, asking questions for clarification, and advise on how to best communicate their ideas. When advising, I use explanations geared towards each student's method of thinking. It is important to me that students fully understand the lesson.

I understand that being a student is stressful, and am trained in helping students navigate high-stress situations by calmly coaching them in re-evaluating their concerns. As a result of my students' success, I was a frequently requested tutor at the University Writing Centre.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

When I was in Grade 1 and I got a piece of writing published in the local paper.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I think lack of communication is the source of many problems, and it's important to develop strong communication skills, particularly in writing.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Seeing results! When my student went from a C to an A, I was as proud of them as they were of themselves. I think what makes me a "superprof" is that my end goal is to equip my students so that one day they will no longer need a tutor.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My very first English professor in university was an incredible teacher, and I use some of her practices with students (Shout out to Dr. Jacques).
  • What are your keys to success?

Putting in the effort, and believing that you can grow.
