About Toree

I am a student and an educator. I value empathy, integrity, honesty, and kindness. I am also direct, and I can have a firm redirect because my singular intention is to come from a place of objectivity and neutrality to the best of my ability. This means that I attempt to challenge others’ points of view when behavior contradicts with language or when one subjective view speaks a language misunderstood, misperceived, misdirected—a perception revealed illusion while eyes widened to reality, seemingly for the first time. I am inspired by literature, by stories, by how truths and fictions are a spectrum of perceptions the way blue and red lights are empirically opposites on a spectrum, all but an ouroboros save for the addition of that third dimension with which we are gifted the ability to perceive a space to be manipulated—figuratively and literally. I am a writer. I’ve entered and humbly won the two writing contests that I entered while working on my graduate work while finishing my undergraduate work. I led an impromptu graduate class project in which I learned to self-publish and to lead a group of writers to publish a unique and fun collection of short stories in just less than six weeks. I’m the proud leader of a glaring consisting of the loyal and ferocious housecats who follow my shadow’s trail: Nutty Buddy, Lucah, and William James (all girls, all quirky and fun!).

I’ve been told by students whom I tutor at a college in which I work that I am relatable, that I have unique and articulate ways of explaining elements of the writing process, of critical reading strategies, and of learning how to logically conclude unknown vocabulary by learning etymologically persistent pre- or suffixes and root words, often borrowed from languages such as Latin, Greek, Germanic, French, and Norwegian. My unique interests aside from English, grammar, syntax, and literature are subjects such as quantum physics, biographical histories, Film studies (1920s-1950s in particular), Romanticism (the only political period named after a literary movement, in both the U.S. and in Europe; thus, I am particularly knowledgeable in the historical and literary aspects of the Romanticism Movement). Because the breadth of my scholarly interests are boundless, my experience as a student and as an educator has been to connect with students based on their individual needs rather than as an equation. I generally ask my students what they want to improve upon rather than immediately assuming what they need based solely upon the work provided. If the student isn’t sure what they need or how to begin an essay, how to edit their essay, how to proofread their essay, and how to prepare to submit essays in formal formatting such as MLA (humanities/English) and APA (math/sciences). I often check-in with my students throughout our sessions to ensure that they are following along in the learning process. I may provide up to three examples or suggestions for room for improvement for students upon draft submissions because rewriting is a delicate process in which students often become overwhelmed (so I limit my suggestions to more in-depth examples). Once I’ve provided an initial introduction and lecture for improvement, I encourage the students’ engagement as we work together, and I conclude the lesson by asking the student to either show me their understanding of the concept or to clarify questions concerning the student’s understanding. I always invite the student to return to me as often as they need, and while I can be direct when addressing errors or when points of view challenge both student and tutor, I’ve heard only positive and affirming feedback from not only grateful students who felt like they “actually enjoyed learning for the first time in a long time” but from professors of students whose work seemed to “come alive” when that student felt confident enough to lead an intelligent and articulate discussion about ‘Romanticism in Ayn Rand’s _Anthem_’ when only four weeks before that student had been, according to one professor, a “wily wallflower.” My lessons are respectful and offer a judgment-free platform. I am an honest, but gentle tutor who is respectfully direct, who is present and attentive, and who will admit error or to not knowing when the time comes.
