About MERLYN
Hello! A little about myself! I am a current MSc Computational and Mathematical Finance student at the University of Edinburgh. I obtained my integrated master's degree from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal, India, where I majored in Physics, following which, I was awarded a postgraduate certificate in theoretical and mathematical physics from Queen Mary, University of London. Being a student myself, I would be able to understand the common issues that students face while learning and offer suggestions. I believe teaching is an integral part of learning the subject. I wish to spread my knowledge, guide and mentor students, and in this process, strengthen my teaching skills and hone my concepts. I also expect it to be a platform for outreach and to extend help to those who need it.

Typically, multiple 1 hr lessons [45 min theory session + 15 min problem-solving session], practice questions as take-home assignments and multiple doubt sessions. I bring practical tutoring and mentoring experience from my roles as a student representative, resident assistant, and event head in academic festivals, where I supported peers and younger students in both formal and informal learning environments while maintaining student engagement, and fostering intellectual curiosity. I believe I can adapt to different learning styles of students with different teaching techniques that aim at conceptual clarity and practice. I would also be able to give suggestions on how to excel at examinations, if and when required. My teaching style involves explaining the crux of the concept firmly, doing sample problems and then practice problems, in a sequence starting from basics and gradually going on to more involved problems.

Merlyn has been a close friend of mine for upwards of nine years, starting when we both joined the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) for a (BSMS) Dual degree, where we both majored in Physics. Merlyn's biggest interpersonal qualities are her instinctive empathy, and her infinite patience, along with a deeply ingrained passion for science and teaching. Merlyn grew up seeing her mother voluntarily teaching and helping neighbourhood kids with their studies most evenings after work, and the same attitude has rubbed off on her. She has always been attracted to the idea of learning via sharing ideas, and even among peers, she would always encourage sharing how each of us learnt the same concepts, to compare and enrich all of our understandings. She is very academically capable, and she can break down very complicated concepts into pieces that depict a larger picture when viewed in their totality. At the same time, she does not understate the importance of getting a good grip on the basics that often get overlooked. Having known her for almost all of our professional journey, I can confidently say that Merlyn will make an excellent tutor for students from both your elementary and advanced curricula, as she is very capable of simplifying seemingly complicated concepts, as well as demonstrating the simpler basics of a topic.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Merlyn as someone with a natural ability to teach through our many discussions. As a student of math with an interest in physics, I recall a conversation where she effectively gave me an "introduction to physics", beginning with interference experiments and gradually moving on to the Unified Field theory. Despite my lack of prior background in physics, she sparked my curiosity by presenting ideas clearly and without unnecessary complication, while still highlighting the great depth behind those topics.
Her teaching style emphasises bringing forward the crux of a theory, encouraging curiosity and deeper thought. She is patient, creates an inviting space for questions, and speaks with great passion emanating from her words. Anyone who engages in discussion with or learns from Merlyn will find her well-read, knowledgeable, and firmly grounded in the fundamentals, and will walk away with understanding and clarity that leave a lasting impression.A great tutor is not only knowledgeable in their subject but also able to step into their students’ shoes, understanding their challenges on a personal level. Merlyn excels on both fronts, combining deep expertise with genuine empathy
