About Anthony

I first started tutoring math in the ninth grade, when I organized and led a study group for students struggling with geometry. This experience help kickstarta lofelong love of teaching. In 2018, I began working as an adjunct professor in the sociology department at Hunter College. later that same year I recevied a quantitative reasoning fellowship to run the math tutoring center at CUNY's School of Professional Studies. I worked at the tuoring center for four years, during which time I helped dozens of students from across the spectrum of needs and ability.

I am a doctoral candidate in sociology with extensive training in statistics. As part fo this training, one must also master the algebraic prcoesses that help us solve complex equations. I also have experience working as a data scientist and am skilled in a wide range of math and computer programs like Excel, Python, RStudio, and SPSS. Most importantly, I spent four years running a math tutoring center at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. In that time I helped dozens of undergraduates and master's students get through their coursework from college math to statistics to master's theses.

About the lesson

The first and most important step when I begin working with any student is identifying the source of their struggle with math. Sometimes it is a lingering anxiety of math, other times difficulty with concepts, and in other cases still it is a lack of knowledge of the technological tools needed to make math simple and — frankly — fun. Once I have identified the source of the problem, I can work with the student overcome their anxieties, master technology, or build a simple process by which they can solve nearly any math problem.

I have worked with a wide range of students including young undergraduates who need help understanding concepts they never really grasped in high school to much older adults who were returning to school after many years. Many of my students had special needs and often had varying ranges of English proficiency. Regardless of the student's needs, age, languge, or ability, I was able to work with all of them to create a safe learning environment for them to flourish.
