About Shellie

My name is Shellie McCarty, and I live in the United States! I was born and raised in the southeastern part of the U.S. in Knoxville, Tennessee. I am what some call a "southern gal." I have wanted to teach for as long as I can remember, but as life sometimes does, it took me another direction. However, a couple of years ago I heard about ESL and teaching English online and knew it was another opportunity to do what I had always known I wanted to do. Needless to say, I completed my certification, started teaching, and I have loved it as much as I thought I would!

If you are a parent whose primary language is not English and you have a child who is beginning to learn English, I can help them learn to speak it correctly and fluently. Most of my experience is with children ages 4-6. Lessons are upbeat, fun, and engaging! If you choose to bring your child to my home for lessons, he/she will also absolutely love the classroom and all that it entails! Songs, books, crafts, and activities are all relatable to the lesson of the day. I will always show up with a smile and a positive attitude because I am truly honored that you are giving me the opportunity to be a part of your child's journey to speaking fluent English!

If you are an "older" beginner, I can help you as well on your road to speaking like a native! Lessons will relate to real-life situations and will consist of vocabulary you will find useful in your day-to-day activities and routines. We can focus on speaking, writing, reading, listening or all of the above! I can help you with vocabulary, help you get ready for a job interview, help you write grammatically correct emails and other business correspondence, or just have a telephone conversation with you!

About the lesson

When teaching younger students (and also from being a mom), I have found that repetition is a key factor. We will begin each and every lesson by singing the Hello Song. The first few minutes of every lesson will be reviewing what we learned in the last lesson. To give an example, the very first lesson, which is a free trial lesson, is titled "Hello." The focus is on greetings, names, following simple instructions, and recognizing 3 colors. The last 10-15 minutes will be spent identifying 3 letters of the alphabet, tracing the 3 letters, learning what sounds the 3 letters make, etc. We will close each and every lesson by singing the goodbye song. The alphabet song will also be sung during our "alphabet time" each lesson. Feel free to sing these songs with your child at home. I will be happy to provide you with the words to any of the songs we sing. I have access to a multitude of online ESL materials and resources that I can share with my students! I am more than eager to get started!

Older students can be beginners too! Some of my lesson plan topics are food, greetings, following instructions, etc. Lessons will focus on either speaking, writing, reading, or listening. Lessons are very interactive and student participation is of course essential to learning the language. An example of a lesson I will put all of my effort into helping you learn to speak English like a native as quickly as I can!
