About Julie
I am a tenured Assistant Professor of English with a decade of experience in the classroom and more than a decade of experience tutoring students one-on-one, helping them improve their writing and editing skills as well as their understanding of literature and poetry. I can tutor anyone from elementary school through graduate school--I've taught all levels and professionally tutored high school through PhD students. For my main job, I teach English to primarily freshman and sophomore students, and I have been homeschooling my daughters since elementary school (they are in high school now, both scoring well above average on national exams). I'm a published author, having written a textbook introducing the freshman composition classroom to growth mindset, and I am a former Chancellor's Learning Scholar, which is a prestigious program developed by the University System of Georgia for select faculty to learn cutting-edge pedagogy, which we then brought back to our institutions.

Depending on the topic we're covering, a typical lesson would start with us going over the main points of what we're going to cover, then breaking the concepts down into smaller chunks and focusing on one at a time, and finally bringing everything back together at the end to ensure mastery. I can create online learning modules for us to go through together, or for the student to practice in their own time, or more traditional lessons that we review together. All of this is dependent on the student's preferred learning style. I am flexible and can adapt my teaching methods to meet the student where they are at.
My classes are appropriate for college students in their freshman through senior years, high school students in their freshman through senior years, and middle school students who have more hands-on involvement from their parents. I can also help ESL students of any age learn how to speak or write more fluent English.
