About Jake

Hello! My name is Jake and I am from the UK. I live in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England. I love teaching students from all over the world and learning about their countries, cultures, languages, history, and everything else. When I am not teaching I have many different hobbies like learning Spanish (and other languages), reading, the gym, cooking, playing video games, volunteering and so on! My goal in the future is to teach English abroad so let me know if you have any tips!

About the lesson

I currently teach in a local ESL school in Newcastle, teaching 1-to-1 classes, small groups and conversational classes. These include students from all backgrounds, countries, age groups and levels from beginner to advanced. I enjoy teaching all parts of English such as vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, grammar, pronunciation and everything else. English is best learnt through a combination of these with more focus given to areas which need them, which is what we will be doing! Because I have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish, this means I am better able to understand how students communicate using Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Romanian etc.). I also have a basic understanding of Polish, meaning I can understand the fundamentals of Slavic languages (Polish, Czech, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovakian etc.). Whilst I am not an expert in these languages, having this intermediate/foundational knowledge is helpful for teaching students! But, of course, in the lessons we will be using only English! Let's have a trial class to discuss your needs, availability and learning style. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know each other a bit. I make it a priority to learn about my students so I can make the classes as fun and relevant as possible. I also like to keep my classes relaxed and a little informal, so bring a cup of coffee or tea and a few biscuits if you like (or whatever people like to eat and drink in your country!)

I have to say that I was lucky to choose Jake, and I have never met a person who in such a short time has proven to be so humble, honest and good. Jake is very attentive to your needs and tries to please you in every way possible. In addition, he is a very good teacher, he makes you feel at ease, he really cares about you learning English and makes you carry out the lesson in the best possible way, making it fun as well. I am not very good at English, and I started from scratch, Jake managed to unblock me and be more relaxed when speaking English. I will continue taking classes with him, and I will do so even when I already speak English well, so I can practice and train myself in this language with a very good and nice person.

I charge £20 an hour because I believe that to be a fair price for quality tuition. However, a better way to think about it is that this fee also includes all the homework tasks and a wide range of resources which I can share at no extra cost! :)
