About Paul

I am a retired teacher of 26 years and taught Science, Physics, Maths and ICT. I have taught in six schools, three mainstream and three for children with ASN/SEN. I have been a Head of Maths, responsible for teacher training as an Initial Teacher Training Coordinator and been a member of a Senior Leadership Team.

My qualifications are BSc(Ed) Hons and PGCert. Prior to teaching I have worked in the Royal Mint, Royal Air Force, a large data company and even as a self-employed motorcycle courier so have experience beyond teaching.

I am PVG (Scotland) and DBS (England and Wales) certified and registered with the GTCS. Certificates can be produced if requested.

About the lesson

PLEASE NOTE I DON'T HAVE ANY AVAILABILITY AT THE MOMENT
I offer tuition to Secondary age pupils (S1 to S5) studying National 1 to National 5 Maths in the Towie area. Tuition is currently through Zoom. I can also help adults who want to improve their numeracy skills.

Due to both my work experience and teaching experience I am able to tailor my lessons to the specific individual needs of the student and give them relevance to everyday life (most of the time!). In my experience there are many reasons why learners have difficulties with Maths. Comments I have heard include the belief that “Maths can only be understood by certain types of people” and “Maths is so hard it’s not worth bothering to try to understand”. I firmly believe that confidence leads to success and the desire to persevere and overcome difficulties and poor understanding.

I use a number of methods when tutoring. They include established pen and paper techniques, online videos and games, textbooks and past question papers.
