As a teacher, I use what works, and I take pieces of whatever philosophy or methods are most effective for my current students, but I would say that as an overall teaching philosophy, Constructivism is the most closely aligned with my goals and hopes for my students.
While teaching, I use the best practices available for the students I have. My philosophy affects how I go about this, and will affect which values I am stressing to my class. As a Constructivist, I believe that the children need to feel connected and be excited about their learning. They need to feel the relevance to their own lives, and need to construct their own meanings about the world through their experiences and interactions with their environment. As a teacher, I certainly have to guide them, and as a writing teacher, there are very specific rules they must learn to follow, but for me to get genuine, authentic, and interesting work from my students, they will have to be emotionally invested.
I believe in what has been called the five central tenets of Constructivism: valuing students' points of view, challenging students' suppositions, attaching relevance to curriculum, using big ideas, and assessing in context. I hope to create a classroom where students receive teacher created problematic situations and then conceptualize questions, construct hypothesis, and reach consensus on solutions. They will discuss and debate these solutions with the class. As the teacher, I'll set the stage by selecting student groups and outlining the structure of the assignments, and then adapt the questions or requirements based on the direction of the students' inquiry.
My goal as a Constructivist educator is to make the learner construct knowledge rather than just passively absorbing it. This personal interaction and commitment to the subject on the student's part will almost always result in deeper understanding and appreciation for the subject, as well as more enjoyment of the learning process. For ELA students, this sort of engagement is crucial. Writing that shows zeal and commitment is always better than writing that is forced and impersonal, and if students are allowed to participate more fully in the form their education takes, they will always feel a more personal connection that breeds the interest and passion in the subject necessary for deeper understanding and appreciation.

Details
I will work one on one with students for $25 an hour in person and $20 an hour online. For college essays, I charge by the essay. For $60 I will give a college application essay three passes. First, I will give feedback on the content. Then, I will help revise their essay. Finally, I will go over it one last time to edit any grammatical or rhetorical errors.
