About Haydn

A highly motivated and ambitious Teacher of English with a range of experience in secondary education in both the public and private sector for the last five years. Possesses excellent analytical & teamwork skills, enabling clear and concise communication with all students. Qualifications that I have taught, GCSE English Literature and Language, IGCSE, A-Level English Literature.

In terms of classroom practice, I have found that learning can be best accessed through the use of a wide range of teaching strategies allowing pupils to build an understanding of complex ideas and concepts. For example, I regularly use timed competitions in pairs for the teaching of creative writing, or even literary analysis, that helps to compartmentalize skills into manageable stages. This ensures that the pupils constantly reflect on the process of successful writing, as they strengthen their own skills. Additionally, I feel that I have been able to address the gaps between the progress of different groups of students through highly engaging activities and have ensured that pupils of all backgrounds and abilities are able to access learning.
I believe that I approach behaviour for learning through a ‘firm but fair’ attitude. This approach has been mirrored recently as my lessons have moved online with MS Teams. As behaviour issues have arisen through remote teaching, it has remained imperative to maintain consistent monitoring of behaviour and to ensure that parents and students are aware of my expectations within the online classroom. That being said, they do have the understanding that positive behaviour is rewarded. In the past I have used student of the week competitions, an in-class raffle ticket system and have rewarded improved behaviour with positive phone calls home, and positive postcards. This has helped me to develop a positive working relationship with my students and to establish myself in the classroom. In order to encourage disengaged pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, I have ensured that I give them leading roles during group tasks to cultivate their leadership skills and to give them a greater sense of authority and responsibility.

About the lesson

My lessons are knowledge-rich, using it as the foundation to developing the skills required to succeed at GCSE examinations. I work on the retrieval of knowledge throughout my lesson sequences and regularly assess the work my students produce, offering strong and effective feedback.
