About Simran

My name is Simran, and I have always had a passion for teaching and inspiring other people. When I was still a student in school myself, I always took it upon myself to coach my peers, take on voluntary roles as a leader for sports clubs, take over lessons to coach younger students on exam technique and acquire roles of responsibility as a society leader. I myself benefited so much from having other people be patient enough to coach me through subjects I found difficult at GCSE and A-Level, therefore I know the difference tutoring can make. I have always admired the work teachers do, and I know that I have the skills to help others in a similar way. Being a student myself I understand that studying can be overwhelming, difficult, boring and tiresome, however it is in having this experience that I know how I can uplift and inspire students to overcome these feelings.

About the lesson

Having tutored students before, I have learnt that the best approach is one that instils confidence in the student, rather than one that simply seeks to better their skills. The key to achieving this outcome, is through making sessions interactive in a personalised way to the particular individual. For example, when focusing on poetry, it is not only important to teach the students the key terminology to use in an exam, but to have them complete activities such as rewriting the poem in simpler English to gain proper understanding. In Literature, it is necessary to make colour-coded mind maps and Venn diagrams to show how themes and concepts correlate. In order to decide which activities suit a student best, I will gauge an understanding of the way that they learn and adapt my lessons to ensure the learning is on their terms, for this is what instils confidence. A lesson will typically be an hour long, for I find this to be the ideal length to hold a student's attention, whilst fitting in sufficient learning, however this can be flexible as the thing that is most important is adapting to a student's needs. My qualifications: - I have taught exam strategy lessons to GCSE students. - I achieved A*A*A at A-Level, with over 90% in English, and now study English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Bristol. - I have had poems published through winning poetry competitions and am now an aspiring poet. - I have been a swimming coach before and know how to collaborate with and train younger students.
