I like to lay out the prerequisites i.e the tools to learn any topic first and get everyone aquainted with them then conceptual understanding will be the key focus followed by a lot of problem solving to test your understanding and gain confidence in the subject. I believe that one shouldn't study a topic for a particular exam as it doesn't do justice to the elegance and effort put into developing the topic.
