About Selina

My name is Selina, I'm in year 11, I love working with the younger grades, and guiding and helping them in chosen subject. I really enjoy playing sport and socializing, and spreading positivity! I really enjoy my subjects at school and I really enjoy going to school. I understand what it’s like to be a student who doesn’t always grasp concepts right away. Because of this, I am patient and committed to helping students learn in a way that makes sense to them, while building confidence along the way. I am a dedicated and patient math tutor who focuses on clear explanations, strong foundations, and building student confidence. I am organized, professional, and committed to supporting students at their own pace in a positive learning environment.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring
My tutoring approach is student-centred, structured, and supportive. I focus on helping students truly understand maths rather than memorising steps. I believe confidence is just as important as content, especially for younger students, so I create a calm, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

I adapt my teaching style to each student’s learning pace and needs, making sure no one feels rushed or left behind.

Techniques and teaching methodology

I start by identifying what the student already knows and where their gaps are

I break concepts down into simple, clear steps using age-appropriate language

I use worked examples first, then guided practice, and finally independent questions

I regularly check understanding by asking students to explain their thinking

I reinforce learning with repetition, real-world examples, and short practice questions

I focus on building strong foundations, especially in basic number skills and problem-solving

For students who struggle or lack confidence, I slow the pace and prioritise clarity and reassurance.

Typical length of a lesson

My lessons typically run for 45–60 minutes, depending on the student’s age, attention span, and learning goals. For younger primary students, shorter and more interactive sessions work best, while older students benefit from a full hour with practice time.

Qualifications / experience

I have strong skills in mathematics and experience supporting students with their learning by breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps. I am currently a senior secondary student studying mathematics and am familiar with the Australian curriculum. I understand common challenges students face because I have developed effective study habits and learning strategies myself.
