About Laiba

Hi everyone! I'm Laiba. I've spent the past 4 years studying Statistics at the University of Waterloo and am pivoting towards Actuarial Science. I have experience teaching students of all ages since I was in high school, and I believe that anyone can learn anything, given that they are taught the right way and have the right support.
Outside of my studies, I love reading books, painting, learning how to play new instruments, and teaching myself new languages!

About the lesson

My teaching methodology is largely based on what I have learned through my own experiences as a student. The transition from high school to university can be challenging, and I had to learn through trial and error how to study effectively, using resources such as YouTube, practice problems, and different approaches demonstrated by my professors. I believe that understanding the material deeply yourself is the foundation of being able to explain it clearly to someone else.
When introducing a new topic, I like to begin with a general overview so that the student understands the bigger picture and how the individual concepts fit together.
From there, I break the topic down into its key components and work through examples. I encourage students to ask questions throughout the process and, most importantly, to learn from their mistakes. Rather than simply correcting an answer, I like to work through what went wrong, why it went wrong, and how to approach the problem correctly next time.
I used to think that making detailed notes and completing a certain number of practice problems was enough to succeed. Over time, I learned that actively challenging yourself, identifying gaps in your understanding, and learning from mistakes leads to much more meaningful progress.
My goal as a teacher is therefore not just to help students get the right answer, but to help them develop the understanding, problem-solving skills, and confidence to eventually arrive at that answer independently.

In high school, I taught make-up classes for students who missed exams in subjects like Algebra, Calculus, Statistics, Chemistry, and English. I did this for a group of different grades, ranging from the 5th grade to the 12th, which taught me how to adapt my teaching style to different ages, abilities, and learning needs. I offer lessons to anyone of any age who wants to learn!

I have completed O-Level, A-Level, and AP Statistics Exams along with SOA Exams P & FM, so it's fair to say I have some experience in the field lol!
