About Mia

I'm a Law and TESOL graduate with a curiosity to learn about anything and everything, which means I often find it difficult to stick to one interest, although I love to practise yoga and usually have about five books on the go at any one time.

I love languages because they help us communicate with each other more effectively - which is what humans do best. Speaking more languages gives us greater opportunities in life and helps us to understand others' ways of thinking.

I want to use my unique blend of linguistic and academic expertise to help you maximise your potential, incorporating my knowledge of the science of language learning. Working in the education sector has given me a new-found appreciation for the challenges and barriers to learning that teachers and students alike often face, and I want to help you overcome these barriers.

By understanding how you learn most effectively as an individual, I can design a tailored programme aimed at harnessing your strengths and targeting your areas for improvement.

About the lesson

As a Cambridge English certified teacher with a Masters degree in teaching English from the University of St Andrews, you can trust that I'll use my skills and expertise to help you meet your goals. I believe I can be especially useful in supporting English exams for university entrance or helping you write university essays, as this is my specialist subject.

I plan and teach lessons according to your specific needs, because I want you to get the most out of them and to feel that they are an effective use of time in your busy life. I'd start each lesson by briefly looking at what was learnt in the previous one so that I can understand how effective it was and give you an opportunity to revisit this piece of learning. I want to help you build on your skill-set, creating useful links between lessons to help you connect new knowledge with pre-existing knowledge - a science-driven approach to learning! Lessons will be increasingly challenging, only moving on once I feel you've grasped something and you're feeling confident in this area. I'd only use tests as a well-timed learning tool to check progress; when I feel we're ready to move onto a new area; or when I want to understand whether there are still any gaps in knowledge.

I like my lessons to be positive and light-hearted; however, this doesn't mean that I won't challenge you. Research suggests that effective learning happens with a perfectly balanced amount of lower anxiety and enough challenge. I want you to feel that we are working together to reach your specific goals, so I'm always open to hearing what you liked about the lesson and what you didn't find so helpful - the lessons are for you, after all!

Lessons will typically be 50 minutes long, although I'd be happy to teach for 1 hour and 40 minutes if you think this would benefit you most.
